• Yes, I had no problems installing and venting to the outdoors through the top. Even from a previous, different model.

• Yes. The vent works any one of three ways, out of the back, out of the top, or out of the front. You'll have to remove two screws on the back and turn the fan motor in the desired direction. The instructions in the package are very simple; I installed this on my own.

• Yes, the SMH1816S and other Samsung Over The Range Microwaves can be set up to vent externally through the rear or top of the unit, or they can recirculate filtered air into the room through the hidden vent in the front. Thanks for your interest, Ms. Samsung

• In the owners manual it tells you how to change the direction of the vents.
