Can't answer the hard drive question, but the battery life is pretty amazing these days with the advancement of the low voltage CPU's. I can easily get around five hours on this machine just surfing the web and watching music videos. I would however recommend swapping the 3 cell standard battery out for a larger 4 cell one on the market down the road. This may improve battery life even more.
