I don't think it is the style or energy efficiency that makes the fridge last a shorter time than fridges made in the last 20 years. Its because all appliances are engineered to last 7-10 years with plastic parts etc., according to an appliance repairman I knew. All appliances used to last longer because they were made to do so and with stronger metal parts. I would buy the style of refridgerator you like from a company with good reviews and a strong reliability record, and just hope for the best, but know that it is unlikely anything you buy will last 20 years.
