Yes, the shelves adjust and they can be flipped up.

We just leave it up for things like soda bottles, wine bottles, etc. There is room in the door for the milk, or in the front on the right side. We have just found it to be very versatile, especially with stuff like lunchmeat, chess, eggs, yogurt, etc. in the drawer.
