Knobs are metal. They sit lower than the grate so be careful they could get hot if you have a large pan on. They look like they would be dishwasher safe but might be easier to wash by hand.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Both -- a mixture of metal and plastic. The plastic parts comprise the inner stem that connects to the cooktop control mechanism. They are cheaply made with serious design flaws. The stem ruptures easily with standard usage and the replacement cost is $140 per knob. I had to replace all five shortly after the one year warranty expired. I utilized the extended second year warranty provided by my Visa card and had to submit tons of supporting evidence to a third party adminstrator. The claim was repeatedly denied until I threatened small claims court. Only then did I get a check to cover the replacement cost through Best Buy Geek Squad.
