“The manual says not to wash waterproof items in it. Customer service confirmed that I shouldn't wash plastic shower curtains in it. Does anyone have advice about washing rain jackets in it? Should I avoid that too or would it be safe on a certain setting?”

Given the directions say don't do it...I would say it is at your own risk; however, I have washed shower curtains, rain jackets, etc. on gentle and cold and it's just fine.
