Smart TV just means that it has internet capabilities. Your TV will be able to connect directly to apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc instead of running apps from an Xbox or Roku. Most you can plug an Ethernet cord into or connect them via wifi. If you don't use applications like Netflix, don't worry about getting a smart tv.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It just means that it connects to the internet via cat 5 cable or Wifi and allows you to use the pre-installed apps to watch digital content, play games, etc. The apps are accessed from a menu on your remote and you must have internet access to use them. Essentially, a smart tv has greater processing power and abilities than a standard tv which all hinge on reliable internet access. If you don't care about any of that, you can still get a non-smart one for about 15% less the cost of a similarly spec'd smart tv. In some cases, this is better. For instance, you may not want young children accessing internet apps or old folks getting confused with all the excess menus and choices.
