The approximate opening diameter for the front loading 5.0 washer is 14.75 inches. There is a rubber gasket that gives to movement. You have a good point about the actual size of the opening being the relevant measurement instead of the actual door. The door at its widest measurement would be much larger at approximately 25 inches taken from the outside. I hope those measurements help. I should add that small laundry rooms be careful to take into their measurements the size of the door and how it will open. I had to install the washer cater-cornered because of the space limitations. In the end, I had a 1/4 turn to remove laundry from the washer and place into the dryer which was also installed cater-cornered.
