Dolby Atmos is a new audio format for creating and playing back multi-channel movie soundtracks. It was developed to give movie sound a more three-dimensional effect.

Dolby atoms is a new technology that has angled speakers pointing to the ceiling in to sound bar and rear speakers that create an effect of sound over head, which gives you the effect of being in the middle of it all. Theaters do this with actual speakers but is very expensive and really wouldn't work in a typical home environment.
