• Yes, you need 4K Blu-ray with Dolby atmos, to get the Dolby atmos effect on Samsung HW-k950. However the speakers still give a good effect on 7.1 surround sound.

• Yes, the audio must be ATMOS to achieve the full potential of the system. It's OK for normal 5.1, but I'd suggest the surrounds are a little weak by default. When playing an ATMOS source, the rears are quite present, so it's unclear why they are so quiet in other sound modes.
