Hi Kim, The NX58H5600SS doesn't require a hood as long as there's enough clearance between the cook top and the cabinets or other flammable surface above it, as detailed in the installation guide. Ranges are not air tight, so need to be able to vent externally through the door and through the vent located at the rear of the cook top. Samsung Ranges have 4 panes of glass in the door, which helps to prevent heat from escaping by heating the glass, which is a helpful safety feature. It's also possible that this model has a higher BTU output rating than others you've owned. Thanks for your question, Ms. Samsung

Please try again later.The installation manual says this: "Install a ventilation hood or an externally vented Over The Range Microwave Oven over the range cooktop that is as wide as the range, centered over the range, and projects forward beyond the front of the cabinets" (p. 12). This would seem to contradict what the Samsung Rep said above.
