The cooktop is high tempered glass with a ceramic finish. Smooth black with gray burner outlines. No speckling. I was informed by Best Buy associate that the cooktop had a weight rating of 70 lbs...or was it 700? They can look it up for you...still, plenty for a full stock pot, several cast iron Lodge skillets. I wouldn't stand or tap dance on the thing, or slam pots around. But don't worry too much. It can handle the weight.

This material, which is currently used in most smoothtop electric and induction ranges, shares many properties with both glasses and ceramics, but is unique in its formation. Since it is sometimes referred to as either "glass" or "ceramic", it may seem that they are different; however, these are actually abbreviated references to the same material.
