“Can the stands (the two little leg stands) be placed any closer to each other? I read they were 38" or 39" apart, but I have a limit of 32". I really don't like to mount TVs on the wall.”

No they cannot be placed any closer. There are 2 holes to allow the legs to be placed on the tv.
