“If you turn down the volume or mute the sound can you still hear sound thru the headphones”

I would guess it depends on what kind of headphones you're using and how they are connected. I have Bluetooth headphones that are connected to my Xbox and I can mute the TV and adjust the volume of the headphones independently. I haven't tried connecting them to the TV but I would think they would work similarly.
