It is recommended to connect the water hose but if you decide not to hook it up, the dryer will still operate except for the steam/sanitizing function. I have shared the user manual link below. Please access the link and turn to page 31 for instructions on connecting the water hose.

Not sure, we had Best Buy hook it up.  You will want to hook it up, it is one of the greatest features of this dryer!
