Technically, it's both. It's a SATA drive, not an IDE. It will fit in any laptop or desktop built since 2006.

In general, notebooks dated after 2002 have SATA (Serial ATA drives), while those that are older may have a PATA (Parallel ATA drive) or SATA drive (signified by two rows of gold pins). For those notebooks sporting a SATA hard drive, you also have the option of upgrading to a Solid State Drive (SSD).
