This is not meant to be used as an external hard drive for back ups, it does not utilize a USB cable like a normal external hard drive. to use this drive you would need to connect a sata cable and a power cable to the hard drive from the power supply and motherboard. this is typically used as an internal Hard drive in a desktop computer. I added a good external hard drive that would work for what you intend to use it for. hope this helps.
