You can soak two different ways. There is a basin that's attached to the lid and when you raise it, you can place your items there and a stream of water pours in for a soak. The other way is to select the soak cycle, which I use all the time. It's a longer cycle (could be from 1:15 to 1:30 minutes - depending on what you select) but it's worth it. Plus, the spin cycle works so well that it takes half the time to dry your items.
