• Yes, you should be able to place behind your tv and still use remote. I can use from my kitchen without being in direct line of player. But if a wall is in between will not work.

• Infared remote requires line of sight. Try purchasing an IR repeater. Then you can place only the IR 'eye' in plain sight while hiding the other components, limited only by cable lengths.

• Mine works if I am in the same room whether I point it at the player or not. I think the infrared is awesome and needs very little if any 'line of site'.
