No, the screen is not always on but it does have a proximity sensor, so when you approach it, it will turn on automatically and after a period of time, automatically shut off.

You can totally configure elements of the screen on-off feature. Think of it like a computer screen: you have the display, which you can select to stay on for xxx minutes, and then you have the screensaver, which you can configure to stay on for xxx minutes. So, if you want to keep the album art from Pandora or the calendar showing a lot, then keep the display on for a long time and the screen saver short. Or if you're like us and prefer the family photo slide show, the display only stays on for 1 minute and then the screen saver stays on for 2 hours.

Screen will turn off after a few minutes of inactivity. There is a front sensor that will awaken the screen if you are within 1-2 feet of the screen.
