“Can the battery in the Note 8 be professionally changed out at the end of its life, or do you scrap it and buy a new phone? I've,loved the fact that my wife's Note 4 and my S 5 have batteries that can easily be removed and replaced.”

I checked that out since the battery in my Note 3 was user changeable. If taken back to Best Buy or Verizon the battery can be changed rather inexpensively by them.
