does this phone really require a data plan? I need a new phone but only want to use it for calls and text messaging, I can care less about the internet features, and is it possible to just bypass the data plan.

There was a time that you could activate any phone without all the features, but those days are long over. If you want to activate a "Smart Phone" you will be required to activate a smart phone data plan that starts at $30/mo. Sorry

If you only need calls and text Messageing,
You don't need this big / expensive multi feature phone.
The Samsung S4 is a full featured computer !!!

If you get this phone anyway... you will end up getting the Data Plan
there are just too many tempting goodies out there.
For not too much more money I got unlimited calls and text.and 2 gig of shared data..
I use mine on WiFi 90% of the time and have not scratched the surface of my Data. I may even downgrade the data part.

I think you can get minimum 500 MB data but just shut off data on phone and turn on WiFi. Check Verizon site. It is a great phone. Like mini tablet.

Not with Verizon. I tried to tell them that once and they said if the phone says requires data plan then you are SOL. My question to you is why buy a smart phone in the first place??? Get a flip phone!

This phone would require a data plan in order to be added to the Verizon network.
