Usually att will let you you upgrade to an iPhone before the 2 years however an att store will now with their next program

I got my old iPhone in August 2011 and was available for my upgrade in April if I remember correctly. The fine folks at the Best Buy Mobile section can definitely look up your info and let you know when you are ready to upgrade.
