• Your watch uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone. If it is like my Gear S2, then it also can use the local WiFi to connect to your phone. So, my guess is that you do not have WiFi at your gym, so you need to be within Bluetooth range in order to send texts via your watch.

• It uses bluetooth to sync notifications. So yeah your phone has to be either in your pocket or nearby (definitely within 50 feet).
