If you buy the watch with its own plan through your carrier. I have Verizon so we added it to our mobile plan for 9.99 month. That way you can use the watch without having your phone with you. Great for going on a run or if your phone dies you still have watch as an option. It will ring when you have a phone call even if your phone is not with you.

You can answer phone calls with it if it is connected to your phone via Bluetooth.
