No you only need to plug the device in your HDMI ports. It doesn't matter if it's a smart tv or not.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. As long as you have an hdmi port on your TV, it will work. Think of it like a DVD player, it's not necessary to have a smart TV for your DVD player to play your DVDs. Same concept for the adapter.

If you enjoy certain applications like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and YouTube, having a smart-TV may be beneficial. If you like using a Blue Ray/DVD player or just watch cable, you'd be fine with a standard television. A smart TV simply gives you the ability to consolidate hardware and have apps like Netflix, without having an external device (like Apple TV or a Roku). To carry out these activities, the tv actually is wi-fi enabled and will be integrated into your wireless network so you don't have 7 different remotes laying around to hunt for.
