The remote has a pointer built in so you do not need to connect it to smartphone. It can do all features without needing smartphone connection. The only benefit of smartphone is it will notify you of any errors (such as stuff stuck in rollers) to your phone, but it also will beep if that happens. Hope this helps!

You can use the remote to get the vacuum to start and it will do it's thing or if you want to direct it to a particular spot you can use the remote for that. I have not used the WiFi function and am quite happy with the performance as such.
