I purchased one to try it out because not even the Samsung ambassador comprehends the difference between wi-fi and the internet. Here is what I found: 1. To set up the plug, the Samsung hub has to be connected to your router (by either ethernet or Wi-Fi) and your router has to be connected to the internet 2. To turn the plug on or off using the Samsung App the Samsung hub has to be connected to your router (by either ethernet or Wi-Fi) and your router has to be connected to the internet 3. To set up a smart app routine to turn the plug off and back on at set times the Samsung hub has to be connected to your router (by either ethernet or Wi-Fi) and your router has to be connected to the internet 4. HOWEVER, once it is set up, the Samsung hub WILL turn the plug on via a pre-set time in the smart app WITHOUT a connection to the INTERNET as long as the hub is connected to your router (by either ethernet or Wi-Fi). So I can use it to shut off my modem at a set time, cutting off my connection to the internet (but no the router), then turn the modem back on as long as I do it via set times via a smart app routine. I should get a free plug from Samsung for figuring this out for them. How does a person become a Samsung ambassador without knowing how Samsung products work?
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.people who don't know the difference between a wi-fi connection and the internet should probably not try answering the question. A wi-fi router does not need an internet connection to be connected to wi-fi enabled devices. Many of those wi-fi enabled devices, however, are designed without self-contained instructions so they need to be told what to do by the manufacturer's server sending the instructions over the internet. I'm looking for a plug that can be turned on and off by just wi-fi with no need for receiving instructions from the server over the internet. The plug will ALWAYS be connected to the WI-FI router. The router will not be connected to the INTERNET after the modem is turned off by turning off the plug. The question is whether the plug can be turned on through WI-FI when there is no internet connection.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I would recommend checking. I probably can't go into detail here but there is plugs thatwill detect no internet and powercycle themselves. This one to my knowledge doesnt. What i did was attached a plug to my cellular based alarm panel so i can teigger it with no internet.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hello! The Smart Plug does require a WiFi connection in order to control the device remotely from your phone. Thank you for considering SmartThings! ~Samsung Brand Ambassador
