Yes, the receiver can be placed vertically or horizontally because it is independent of the soundbar.

I mounted it using industrial strength double sided sticky tape. It shouldn't matter weather you have the unit standing vertically or laying down horizontally. The most important thing is that you don't block the vents so air can still flow through the unit to prevent overheating I ran the speaker wire through my attic, but chose to mount the speaker control unit inside the man cave, rather than out of site, in the attic, just in case I ever need to reset the device. Seems like every time these types of devices get an update, you have to re-establish the wireless connection so it's just more convenient this way. Besides, I already have the projector and power outlet right there. Hope this helps - enjoy.
