No you don't need the case to work with items other than an iphone in the otterbox universe case. You are wasting your money if you buy this version tho. For non-otterbox applications, find the ixpand version that is not otterbox case specific, then it will work on anything. The black plastic part of this piece is to specifically engage with the slide on the universe case. Models without the black plastic are more appropriate for you.
