Can't answer for other devices or backup utilities, but with my 2021 M1 iMac running Sequoia 15.5 and the Mac's built-in Time Machine app, it is essentially plug and play. No need to update drive firmware-- it's now part of the Mac OS and the latest is added upon startup. Just plug the drive into one of the Mac ports, open the Time Machine settings, and hit the + icon to add the new drive. The first full backup starts automatically and continues on whatever schedule was chosen for your previous backup drive.
