• I suppose you could, but in the event of an earthquake, or any other sufficient force applied to the TV, then both the TV and stand will topple over. I'm pretty sure the intent is to attach one end to the wall to prevent that.

• If your stand weights a lot more than your Tv and the stands CG is good, then you are probably Ok.
