Absolutely this will fit a 42" without a problem. It may be overkill with the price though. You might want to google wall mounts for 31". I think there are some that are cheaper for that size TV but still offered the extended distance from wall. I had to go with this one due to the TV size. You won't be unhappy though either way...this is a great mount!

If your measure the holes on your tv and this mount can accommodate, then I suppose it would work. I would think that a size 42 inch probably has the same holes for this mount and it would likely work. One way to figure it out sadly... best wishes
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Easily, if you didn't need the extension, I'd say its even overkill; the smaller Sanuses (Sani?) would be fine. I have a 55 inch Samsung on the mount because I don't want to buy a new TV and like you needed the extension in order to use the swivel. When I'm ready to replace the Samung, I plan to install a 60-70 inch screen. The mount will hold a screen that size without a problem. Unless you are extremely handy have the mount installed by Geek Squad or a reputable installer. The mount is rock solid, but any mount is only as strong as the attachment to the wall.
