“Does the stud for the mount have to be in the exact center of where the TV will go? Can the TV be adjusted to fit the middle of the opening if the stud is not in the exact center?”

No the stud does not have to be in the center of the tv. With the stud being off centre though, you will poss. loose some of the motion. What i did was i put a 5/4 x 8 inch board across 3 or 4 studs so i could move the mount closer to the centre of the tv.
