“Is there a specific mounting procedure when sticking it to the windshield? I.E. applying pressure before clamping the brace? not applying pressure? It doesn't seem to want to stay on long.”

As long as you hold it flat against the windsheild and aply a little pressure it should hold when you push down the suction lever.
