Yes it is online only and multiplayer. You can sail a sloop solo though. But up to 6 ships can be sailing around on a server at any given time which means as many as 24 players on a server if all 6 are galleons. Lots of fun!

Yes, its an always-online, shared world adventure game. You have to log into online servers to play. Needs Xbox live sub. PC you dont need any subscription, just internet access.
