“Will this hard drive work with an 18 month old HP desktop computer with a build ID? I have an 18-month old HP Pavillion with a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green hard drive that came with it and just failed. HP support said that all their computers have a build ID that is on almost all the internal hardware, including the hard drive. They would not guarantee that any other hard drive I didn't buy from them would work. I think they're blowing smoke, but I wanted to check to see if anyone has every dealt with this. Thanks!”

Yes this drive will work in your hp for sure, and you are correct that hp is trying to confuse you so that you buy from them. Ignore them.

Please try again later.dont know but I have a Dell Demension 520 several years old had a seagate 240 Gb harddrive that crashed Geek Squad replaced with seagate 1 TB harddrive reinstalled all software and operatig sytem for $180.00 I think the harddrive was $55.00 but it rins better than new

The "ID" is in your Device Manager and All Computers have that. A Hard Drive is a Hard Drive which you simply connect power and the SATA connector. Once connected just Format and install your OS.

Don't let anyone blow smoke up on you saying that their product only uses a particular type of drive. For laptops, the 1TB drives are thicker than the 500GB so if you have a slim laptop (macbook pro for ex) you may want to make sure that the thickness of the HD will let you screw the cover back on. Green drives SUCK! They should never be used as primary system drives on ANY machine. If you can afford the BLACK, great. If not, a Blue or the Seagate Barracuda would be fine. Good luck!
