This unit, if only because it includes a powered USB 3 hub, requires external wall power For drives powered via USB, look for "portable" in description. Seagate makes Backup Plus portables at least as large as 4 TB.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This drive has a plug-in power supply that must used in an AC outlet. It cannot be powered by the USB connector alone.

I forgot to address whether it is capable of being powered by the USB 3.0 cable plugged in to a laptop or desktop or rather dependent on the AC adapter included with the drive. It IS dependent on the AC adapter for powering the drive. It needs to be within 5.5 ft. of a wall power outlet. So, it isn't as portable as the Seagate Slim Backup Portable drives. However, this product contains a 7200rpm 3.5" HDD (reliably consistent performance even when plugged in to USB 3.0 Hubs) capable of extended random and sequential read and write speeds between 80 and 110 MB/s. I have only been able to get that kind of performance from Solid State Drives and 3.5" hard disk drives that need more power than the 2.5" or 1.8" portable drives require. The NVme m2 external drives powered by USB 3.1 connection may be pricey, but you can get 500MB/s transfer and write speeds that are quite coveted nowadays. Thank you.
