Sure it can be used for a PC, or a laptop, or as an add-on to a DVR ( be sure to check compatibility first ), or as a stand alone hard drive, however you choose to use it.

Yes. It works with Windows. (I'm not sure if it works with Macs.) Just plug in the power to the wall and plug in the usb port and it will show up in MyComputer as "Drive F:" or something similar.

All USB hard drives are cross-platform… Just format to what you need.
