for vmware the solution was to add mainMem.writeZeroes = "TRUE" to the vmx file, looks good now!

Please try again later.this just started happening again and both times related to vmware workstation and using the drive to store vm's. maybe vmware doing something funny to file system idk?? tested copying 100's gb to/from and no probs so far. so vm's will go somewhere else oh well.
