• A:Answer Yes, this drive can be used for Time Machine. I would recommend formatting the drive first using Disk Utility to the APFS file system and suggest to purchase a drive that is at least twice the capacity of your Mac’s primary drive.

• A:Answer Yes, I believe it is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 (I think it says so in the product info or tech specs). I think all USB 3.0 are backwards compatible to USB 2.0. It just won't be as fast.
