It is "compatible" in the sense that the Series X|S consoles will recognize and communicate with the drive. You can even play older titles from it. HOWEVER, you cannot play Series X|S games from this hard drive (like you could with previous Xbox consoles). This includes Xbox One games that later get enhanced for Series X|S. When you try to play one of these newer games from the external hard drive, you will be instructed to transfer it to the internal memory before you can start.

Please try again later.The way I understand all hard drives work but if you want to take advantage of all the new features on the new games they have to be on the ssd drive or expansion cards. You can keep old games on these hard drives and the new system will enhance the games the way I understand. Also your controllers are compatible with the new systems. Hope this helps
