“Do they need or use batteries or just charge with the cable?”

They charge just with the cable (micro USB).

They have a rechargeable battery, and come with the micro USB cable to charge them. One thing not in the box is the adapter to plug the USB cable into the wall.

The built-in, non replaceable battery is charged with the included USB cable.
