I don't know why you wouldn't be able to. I run mine through a sound bar and I can mute the TV and crank up the surround sound. Your audio outputs on your TV connect to the audio inputs on your receiver and have nothing to do with your TV speakers. Or you can use a optical audio cable for even better sound,
