I have one of this machine in each of our three bedrooms, all of them are put in front of a wall with about 8 inches clearance from the back. They all work well and I notice the fan speeds up when there's more dust. I think as long as the rooms size is within the suggested sq.ft of the machine, it should be fine. Just avoid putting it in the corner and against the wall without enough clearance.
