I think for any air purifier the ideal place would be the center of the room, because it's the center point and should equally suck in air from each corner. But this is not a practical place to put it for most of us. I have one of this machine in each of our three bedrooms, all of them are put in front of a wall with about 8 inches clearance from the back. They all work well and I notice the fan speeds up when there's more dust. I think as long as the rooms size is within the suggested sq.ft of the machine, it should be fine. Just avoid putting it in the corner and against the wall without enough clearance.
