It catches a bit of the weather but I see no ill effects physically to the antennae and the reception continues unabated thru all weather conditions. Be informed that once you turn on the receiver it takes about ten seconds for my unit to actually produce a sound. So, when searching for a position for your antennae, be slow and deliberate. Being downstairs is not an issue. Having an unobstructed south facing line of sight for the antennae is the deciding factor.
