“Does the Sonos require a wifi connection for basic/essential functionality? I'm leaving Bose because their soundbars (300) become bricks because they won't connect to the app and get stuck in an update mode.”

Yes, the Sonos system does require wifi connections. I believe the arc ultra can work through Bluetooth but it’s really optimized for wifi. I love my Sonos setup. The app can be funky at times but usually just requires updating. Overall I definitely recommend it.

You could disconnect it after that point, but you would not get any updates. Also, you aren’t really getting any connected features if you don’t setup any streaming or voice services, but you gain the ability to control the TV audio through the app. Unless you have security concerns about Sonos being connected, I would leave it connected and never use features you don’t want to use.
