Lausie, It will work independently. The SONOS system works via your phone app and not some main system from the house. I have it installed on my Pool Deck and often just use that when I'm out there independent from my house. The speakers and the amp however, are needed as a source to make it work. The Phone app regulates the music sources i.e. iTunes, Pandora eat.

From my understanding the amp is required to power the speakers however your source for the audio can be anything else such as a bluetooth signal or in my case, coming from a different receiver elsewhere in the house.
