Only for 5 minutes, they shut off automatically after that if you aren't listening to music. If you want that feature I would suggest the Bose QC 35.

It will dampen the sound around you and depending on what you want to block out you may actually be able to completely. Without some sort of audio playing though voices may creep though or other high audible noises depending on what it is exactly.

Yes they can be used without music to cancel out noise. I use them in an environment that has a ton of computer equipment running and it significantly cuts down on the noise that they make.

i was told by the store salesman "no". i found out after i bought the headset. i tried to contact sony to see if it is true, but nobody got back to me. it is my only complaint about the headset. while on an airplane recently i had to turn it back on every 5 minutes.
